Perm State Medical University, officially known as Perm State Medical University named after Academician E. A. Wagner, is a venerable public medical institution located in Perm, Russia. Its history dates back to 1916, when the medical department was part of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics at Perm State University just one year later it became an independent faculty, and in 1931 the Perm Medical Institute was formally established.

Over time, the institute evolved: in 1994 it was renamed to the Perm State Medical Academy, and in 2014 it was granted full university status and took on the name of its influential rector, Academician E. A. Wagner, who had led the institute from 1970 to 1995. Today, PSMU is one of the largest and oldest medical universities in Russia, with a strong reputation for its academic staff — around 80% of its teachers hold advanced academic degrees (Candidate or Doctor of Medical Sciences).

The academic structure of PSMU is broad and deeply rooted in both education and research. The university comprises seven faculties — including Medicine, Pediatrics, Preventive Medicine, Dentistry, Clinical Psychology and Higher Nursing, Additional Professional Education, and Pre‑University/Targeted Education — along with a Medical and Pharmaceutical School, 72 departments, and four independent courses.

The teaching staff is highly qualified, with more than 140 Doctors of Medical Sciences and over 450 Candidates of Medical Sciences contributing to education across roughly 75 specialized departments. The university also supports a strong research culture: it is integrated with institutions of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and its scientists frequently attract grants from major Russian funding bodies such as the Russian Foundation for Basic Research and the Russian Humanitarian Science Foundation.

Student life at PSMU is rich and multifaceted, offering a mix of academic rigor, cultural engagement, and physical well-being. The campus itself spans approximately 50 hectares, featuring some 27 buildings that house academic departments, clinics, hostels, shops, and sports complexes.

Students have access to a variety of extracurricular outlets: there are facilities for sports like basketball, handball, gymnastics, and football, while cultural and social life is bolstered by student centers, a computer center, a cultural center, restaurants offering multinational cuisines, and even an international post office. Over the years, PSMU’s campus has received public recognition; for instance, the campus was awarded the Moscow Mayor’s Prize for “Best Campus,” highlighting its pleasant, functional, and student-friendly design.

When it comes to accommodation, PSMU provides a supportive and comfortable environment for students. There are 12 hostels (dormitories) on or near campus, many of which feature shared rooms (typically two or three students per room), fully equipped kitchens, Wi-Fi, and communal amenities. The hostels are not only practical but have also been recognized for their quality — they won an all-Russia contest award for “Best Student Hostel.”

Within the dorms, students have access to common kitchens, study and recreation areas, laundry facilities, and spaces for social interaction. This setup helps to foster a strong sense of community among students, including international students, who find the hostels welcoming and well-organized.

PSMU’s facilities are modern, well-maintained, and extensive, catering both to academic needs and student lifestyle. Educational infrastructure includes five reconstructed academic buildings outfitted with multimedia lecture halls, 12 computer rooms, and an electronic medical library. In addition, the university has developed an “imitation center”  , a clinical-simulation facility where students can practice and hone their medical skills in realistic settings. Clinically, PSMU is affiliated with several hospitals and medical centers in Perm, including surgical and dental clinics; these provide students with hands-on training and real-world experience. There is also a modern surgical hospital that has been refurbished and equipped with advanced medical technologies.

On the recreational side, the university supports a strong physical culture: there are gym facilities, training halls, table tennis, billiards, and even spaces for therapeutic physical training, darts, and rehearsal halls for music or drama. Safety and student well-being are carefully considered, and the campus environment is designed to be both stimulating and secure.

For international students, there is dedicated administrative support to help with adaptation, visa matters, and everyday life in Perm. PSMU also values global integration: it is recognized by international bodies such as the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS), FAIMER, ECFMG, and the National Medical Commission (NMC) of India.

Over its long history, PSMU has graduated more than 50,000 doctors, making a significant contribution to both regional and global healthcare. The university also publishes the “Perm Medical Journal,” one of the oldest medical journals in Russia (first published in 1924), which is recommended for publication of doctoral thesis results. Through its blend of tradition and innovation, Perm State Medical University stands as a center of excellence in medical education, offering students not only high-quality academic training but also a rich, supportive, and engaged campus life.
