Tambov State University traces its origins back to institutions founded as early as 1917, which gives it its long-standing reputation as a distinguished educational center. The modern university, however, was formally established by a decree of the President of the Russian Federation on December 29, 1994. This was accomplished by merging the Tambov State Pedagogical Institute and the Tambov State Institute of Culture, creating a comprehensive classical university.
