Its foundation in 1988 as a branch of the prestigious Moscow State University (MSU) immediately provided it with a strong academic foundation and high standards derived from one of Russia’s leading institutions. This connection ensured that USU was established with a focus on comprehensive education and high-level research. The transition to full independent status in 1996 marked its maturity, allowing it to develop its own unique educational programs while retaining the high-quality legacy of MSU.

USU is one of the largest educational, research, and cultural centers in the Volga region, serving as a comprehensive classical university. Its academic portfolio is highly diversified, encompassing ten faculties and several institutes that offer programs across a wide spectrum of fields, including Medicine, Law, Economics, Humanities, Physics and Technology, and Environmental Studies. The university’s commitment to offering a broad range of high-quality degrees aligns with its motto, “Classical choice,” reflecting its role as a leading institution that combines traditional academic values with modern educational approaches.

The university plays a crucial role in international education, attracting students from over 40 countries globally. USU is officially recognized by international bodies, including its listing in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS), which enhances the global recognition of its medical degrees.

This international profile is supported by the availability of specialized programs, such as the General Medicine program (equivalent to MBBS/MD) often taught in the English medium, making it a popular destination for international medical aspirants.
