Yaroslavl State Medical University (YSMU) is a prominent public research institution located in the historic city of Yaroslavl, Russia, approximately 280 km northeast of Moscow. Its founding dates back to 1944, when it was established on the basis of the Belarusian Medical University, which was temporarily evacuated to the city during World War II. This unique origin provided YSMU with an experienced academic base from its inception. Since then, it has evolved into a major regional center for high-quality medical education, biomedical research, and the training and retraining of healthcare specialists for the Central regions of Russia.

The university is a major hub for international students, with educational programs available in both Russian and English medium of instruction, a feature that attracts students from over 40 countries. This global reach is solidified by its international recognition; YSMU is officially listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) and is recognized by key regulatory bodies such as the National Medical Commission (NMC) of India. The university’s strategic goal is to transform into a leading international educational medical center, using its strong foundation in classical Russian medical education to increase its global impact.

The city of Yaroslavl itself contributes significantly to the student experience. It is an ancient city, founded over 1,000 years ago, and is recognized as a part of the Golden Ring of Russia, noted for its rich cultural heritage and beautiful location on the Volga River. The historical center of Yaroslavl is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, providing a stable, culturally enriching, and relatively peaceful environment for students. The university leverages this setting by integrating its clinical training within the extensive network of basic city and regional medical organizations, where students gain essential practical experience in real-world clinical settings.
