Collegium Medicum was previously known as the Ludwik Rydygier Medical University in Bydgoszcz, which was established by the Seym (the lower chamber of the Polish parliament) on July 21st, 1984. In October of the same year, the Rector, Professor dr hab. Jan Domaniewski, officially inaugurated what was then the youngest medical university in Poland. For two decades, the institution developed its core strengths in medical sciences, pharmacy, and health sciences, establishing a strong regional reputation for training healthcare professionals.

A pivotal moment in its history occurred in 2004 when the Medical University in Bydgoszcz was formally incorporated into the prestigious Nicolaus Copernicus University (NCU) in Toruń. This merger resulted in the institution being renamed as the Ludwik Rydygier Collegium Medicum in Bydgoszcz (CM UMK). Since then, it has been providing academic education as an integral part of NCU, benefiting from the larger university’s resources and reputation while maintaining its specialized focus on medical education. The incorporation was a strategic move designed to elevate the scientific and educational quality of both institutions by combining clinical expertise with extensive fundamental research capacity. As a result, Collegium Medicum has significantly expanded its research profile, developing advanced programs in disciplines like molecular biology, cardiology, and oncology. It now stands as one of the largest and most dynamic medical units in Poland, responsible for educating thousands of future doctors, dentists, pharmacists, and health specialists, all while maintaining substantial clinical operations through its affiliated university hospitals, which serve as crucial training grounds and regional medical centers.
