The Siberian State Medical University (SSMU) in Tomsk, Russia, is an institution with a profound history and a dominant presence in Russian medical education and research. Originally founded by Tsar Alexander II in 1878 as the first university in the Asian part of Russia, the Imperial Tomsk University opened its doors in 1888 with the Faculty of Medicine as its sole and founding faculty. This long history has cemented its place as one of the country’s most established and respected medical schools, eventually gaining university status in 1992.

 

SSMU is consistently ranked among the top three medical universities in Russia, and it is considered the leading medical school located outside the country’s capital. Its distinction was further solidified in 2017 when it was designated as the only flagship university among all Russian medical schools. This flagship status acknowledges its leadership in education, science, and medical practice within the Russian Federation. Furthermore, SSMU was selected by the Russian government for the national project aimed at increasing education exports, highlighting its international relevance and quality.

The university has cultivated a reputation as a major educational, scientific, and medical complex. Over its history, it has been the cradle for world-renowned scientific schools, particularly in fields like therapy, surgery, and morphology. The Siberian State Medical University holds a prominent place among the 3 superior most medical schools in Russia on the top of this; it is listed among the top 30 higher educational institutions in Russia. It even possesses a brilliant faculty, out of which 80% are scientific scholars who hold academic titles (375 MDs, DMedSci). For the past years, more than 60,000 students have graduated from this university as doctors and physicians. Also, 40,000 doctors have been certified as specialists by this university.

Siberian State Medical University provides in-campus hostel facilities and the international students who don’t wish to stay here can opt for private residence. Speaking of the hostels, there are all secure and safe with necessary CCTV

surveillance, clock security and fire alarm safety systems. There are separate floors and blocks for boys and girls as the hostels. Each hostel room is equipped with chairs, study tables, beds and bed sheets, lamps, wardrobes, pillows, etc. Plus, there are also attached bathrooms, washrooms and kitchens in every block. However, for the Indian students, there is also this facility of cooking their own food in the Indian mess at Siberian State Medical University.
